Assessment Tools: Role and Story MiniWorkshops

Drama Therapy Group

Saturday, March 4, 2017
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Roles are ever-present in group work and inform the therapeutic process. Group members and facilitators alike take on and play out roles in sessions and information is gained. This workshop will speak to how being mindful and aware of emergent roles guides the process in a trauma-informed manner. Participants will explore the CANY principles of drama therapy and the use of role as a way to conceptualize the group process in both didactic and experiential capacities.

Participants will:
• explore the roles they bring to the therapeutic encounter
• learn to identify and assess the roles that emerge during the group process and
• utilize drama therapeutic tools as a form self-assessment in an effort to challenge assumptions and biases in clinical practice.

Story is the most powerful tool that the drama therapist has. Story allows us to understand our clients and their experiences through their own words and narratives. One unique facet of Creative Alternatives of New York (CANY)’s programming is the many clinical populations served and thus the number of stories heard and subsequently held by group facilitators.

Through play and CANY techniques, this experiential workshop will explore the real and metaphorical stories of our clients over the years and how these stories as well as our own stories give us a roadmap into treatment goals for individuals and groups

Participants will:
• Explore how the concept of aesthetic distance can allow a safe exploration of trauma narratives.
• learn how to use story as a container for group process
• Learn how the use fictional stories can allow deeper reflection into personal stories
• utilize drama therapeutic tools as a form self-assessment in an effort to challenge assumptions and biases in clinical practice.
