Adults on the Autism Spectrum

Drama therapy allows adults with Pervasive Developmental Disorders such as Asperger’s Syndrome to access and engage with their creativity in a positive manner as well as connect with others through dynamic play. As drama therapy group members grow familiar and comfortable with acts of creative self-expression, they demonstrate an increase in confidence, playfulness and spontaneity, challenging the rigid behavioral patterns that typify Asperger’s Syndrome. In addition, drama therapy offers the opportunity for increased interpersonal connection and trust through the creation and enactment of group dramas. Through the exploration of fictional roles, drama therapy also provides Asperger’s adults with the opportunity to express experiences and regulate emotions from afar, increasing body awareness through movement and scene work.
